Feedback on student progress is provided to parents during three trimesters a year using a Standards-Based Progress Report. These reports include rating scales of 1-4 that correlate to standards based benchmarks.
Using a Standards-Based report allows for feedback conversations between teachers, students and parents to focus on growth rather than achievement. Students also receive comments each trimester along with the distribution of reports.
When we transitioned to this type of reporting years ago, feedback provided to students shifted from a score to more meaningful feedback to support student growth.
In Ramsey, we believe that our language reflects our beliefs, and we are committed to nurturing students who demonstrate a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset (refer to the diagram below created by Reid Wilson).
Feedback provided to students is intended to have our students believe that they may have not mastered a concept YET.
Why it matters: You will sometimes see that your students receive assessments that identify areas that are incorrect along with feedback on how they can improve or areas of strength.
It is important to note that we view the entire year as an ongoing process of learning, with each assessment serving as one snapshot that is part of an entire photo.
The progress reports and assessment feedback are a "snapshot" of a student's current level and not a definitive label of their abilities as a learner.
It is, of course, our goal to have all students demonstrate growth throughout the year and maximize their potential as a learner
Go deeper: Here is a link to trimester benchmarks for Kindergarten through Third Grades. Remember, if your child is still “approaching,” that is just fine! They all develop at their own pace and we honor “1s” as not yet and “2s” as on the way!
We hope that when reviewing your child’s progress reports throughout this year, you’ll join us in encouraging a growth mindset.
We thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students.
Should you have specific questions regarding your child's progress report, you are welcome to reach out to their teacher.
