What's happening: Students in 3rd grade are involved with the writing unit — Curiosity, Culture, and Research: A Study in Empathy.
This unitโs purpose is to give students a curricular opportunity to learn about and to appreciate other cultures.
This is an authentic writing exploration because they research their countries, organize their information, and then learn how to convey it in narrative form to teach their audience/readers.
Recently, Hubbard 3rd graders conducted a whole-grade interview/meeting with Mr. Abhishek from Jaipur, India to learn more about the geography and culture of his country.
A Ramsey Graduate: This experience, tied with the academic endeavor to write an extended informational piece, involves students in using their academic mindsets to broaden their exposure to other cultures and build empathy.
Part of the process is for students to learn how to consume factual information through credible sources, and how to organize that information for their readers. This is an applicable skill throughout their school and life experiences.
Why it matters: This is a great example of how our curriculum can link academics to our studentsโ personal development.
