Did you know? November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native American peoples. At Hubbard School, we were honored to receive a special visit from the O’Blenis family, members of the Lenape-Munsee tribe. The family has a special connection to our community, as one of their children is a current Hubbard student and another is a proud alum. Their visit brought history and culture to life for our students in a meaningful and memorable way.
During their visit, students learned about the history and traditions of the Lenape-Munsee people through an engaging assembly. The O’Blenis family shared fascinating artifacts, performed two traditional tribal dances—one of which included student participation—and told a captivating short story that brought the culture to life.
Why is this important? Opportunities like this help our students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Indigenous peoples whose history is connected to our local area. It fosters respect, cultural awareness, and a sense of connection to the past and present. This hands-on learning experience was not only fun but also a powerful way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month!
