Book Club

What's happening: A recent collaboration between Wandell and Dater Elementary Schools brought students together for a book club and a shared experience of the Dater musical. This initiative fosters early connections, easing the transition to middle school for Saddle River students who will later join Ramsey schools.

By the numbers: Students meet three times throughout the year: once at Dater, once at Wandell, and once on Google Meet. They read three books, discussing themes and growing their passion for reading.

What they’re saying: Stephanie Lawley, Dater’s Media Specialist, a key organizer, emphasized, "This book club is about more than reading—it's about creating friendships and a sense of belonging that extends beyond the classroom. This book club gives them the chance to meet students who will be their new classmates in 6th grade at Smith. I also love how the book club introduces students to new authors and genres.”

The big picture: The Ramsey and Saddle River School Districts recently renewed a five-year agreement allowing Saddle River students to attend Smith Middle School, with the option to continue to Ramsey High School. Initiatives like the book club help build unity and shared experiences, laying the foundation for a strong school community.
