6th Grade BOTB

On Tuesday, March 5th, our 6th Grade Battle of the Books teams traveled to Cavallinni for the County-Wide Battle of the Books Competition!

What is it:  Advised by our library media specialist, Ms. Kasey Kelly, Battle of the Books is a Trivia Competition for students based on a state-wide predetermined list of 15 books. Since October, student teams of five have read the books, discussed them, and held meetings to practice quizzing each other on the contents. Teams competed first at an Inter-School Competition between other Smith teams before traveling to Cavallinni Middle School to compete in a trivia tournament against other Bergen County middle schools.

In Smith's 13 year history of this club, this year’s 6th grade was by far our highest scoring teams of all time.

“The Smarties” scored 48 (this team was our Inter-School champion earlier this month), “The Finals” with 56 (this team in the first half missed 0 questions), and “The Smart Aleks” with 88 points (this team got every question correct and made it to the tie breaker round).

For the first time in Smith School history, “The Smart Aleks” had a perfect record in the regular AND in the bonus round. Ultimately, the team took 2nd due only to a timing issue in the bonus round (they correctly identified the answer, but missed the answer cutoff by 0.5 seconds).

The "Smart Aleks" took second place overall in the competition of 11 teams (a record number of teams competing in the 6th grade Bergen County competition!)
