Balloon Parade

Students in Ms. Guarnieri and Mrs. Hicks Humanities classes participated in “Balloons Over Dater.”

Why it matters:  Students deepened their understanding of the Macy's Day Parade through a variety of resources, including reading Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet and watching media clips about the history of the parade, and how Macy's concept artists design balloons.

What they’re saying:  “I had so much fun working with my classmates.  We were able to express our creativity and use our writing skills to plan the steps we were going to follow to construct our balloon.  We faced some challenges along the way, but we worked as a team to accomplish our goal.”  -Isabelle Allen, Dater Student

One fun thing: Tony Sarg’s helium-filled balloons debuted in Macy’s 1928 Thanksgiving Day parade.  Tony continued to work on the parade for many years, later collaborating with Walt Disney on the character balloons. This year, more than 28.5 million people worldwide tuned into the parade!
