Smith Morning Show Camera

Showcasing Power of Multimedia Learning

What's happening: Smith School took a bold step into the future of education last week with the premiere of Smith TV's Morning Show, a student-produced live streaming broadcast that transforms traditional morning announcements into an engaging multimedia experience.

Students arrive before school hours, taking on every aspect of production – from technical setup and sound editing to scriptwriting and on-camera presenting.

What they’re saying: "This initiative represents more than just morning announcements," explained Mr. Bruce Reicher, Smith's Multimedia teacher and program facilitator. "It's a comprehensive learning laboratory where students develop critical skills in communication, technology, and teamwork."

The program, made possible through a grant from the Ramsey Public Education Foundation, demonstrates the vital role of multimedia education in middle school curriculum.

Go deeper: Research suggests that multimedia projects like Smith TV provide multiple benefits for middle school students, including increased engagement, improved digital literacy, and development of essential career-ready skills. By taking ownership of their school's communications, students learn to think critically about media creation and consumption – crucial skills in today's digital age.

The bottom line: The success of this launch reflects a true community effort, with support from IT specialist Mr. Zach Rockefeller, Supervisor Mr. Ken Viet, and administrators including Dr. Esdale, Ms. Rejent, Mr. Sirota, Ms. Khan, and Ms. Kelly. Their collaborative approach ensures students have the guidance and resources needed to succeed in this innovative program.
