What's happening: Students in Ramsey High School's S.T.E.P. (Supported Transition to Employment Program) have found an exciting new way to put their entrepreneurial skills to the test - by partnering with the local MEVO Farms organization.
Why it matters: Through successful fundraising efforts, the S.T.E.P. program was able to bring MEVO Farms, a sustainable agriculture and education nonprofit, into their classroom.
This collaboration will provide the students with hands-on experience in creating and selling their own eco-friendly products.
"Our students are thrilled to be working with MEVO Farms," said S.T.E.P. teacher Margarita Diakos. "This partnership not only teaches valuable business skills, but also promotes sustainability and environmental awareness - two causes our students are passionate about."
What's next: As part of the program, the S.T.E.P. students have begun crafting a variety of nature-inspired items, including natural lip balm made with beeswax and essential oils, as well as fragrant herbal teas using chamomile, rose buds, and lavender.
The Ramsey S.T.E.P. program's collaboration with MEVO Farms is a testament to the students' drive, creativity, and commitment to sustainable practices.
This exciting opportunity will undoubtedly enhance their business offerings and provide a unique shopping experience for the community this holiday season.
Go deeper: Following MEVO’s visit to Ramsey in October, S.T.E.P. students took a trip in November to Fresh Root Farms in Mahwah, NJ to further their learning experience.
There, MEVO staff gave a tour around the farm where students learned about and harvested various crops to make their own salad.
Learning daily living skills is an essential component of our program as we prepare our students for independence.
Our students meal plan, grocery shop, and make their own lunch throughout the school week.
Therefore, having the opportunity to learn about how and where our food is grown locally was a meaningful (and delicious) experience for all!
