What's happening: In an effort to enhance the student learning environment at Ramsey High School, high school students began using Yondr cell phone storage pouches this past Monday. This approach addresses classroom distractions and supports student engagement.
The first two days have gone remarkably well. thanks to the cooperation of students and staff. We are continuing to monitor and adjust procedures each day.
I want to give special thanks to Dr. Thumm (Principal), Mr. Biggan (Director of high school education), and Mr. DeMartino (Dean of Students) for their leadership on this initiative.
Big impact: Based on an annual survey of just over 1,200 schools, here are some of the remarkable results stronger phone safety practices have accomplished:
86% saw a positive impact on student safety and wellness
84% saw a positive change in student engagement
72% saw a positive change in student behavior
68% saw a positive change in academic performance
Yondr pouches offer a simple and effective solution:
These pouches are designed to store cell phones throughout the school day securely.
Students will maintain possession of their phones, but they will be locked within the pouches until the end of the school day or, at designated release times.
This allows students to have their phones readily available for use before and after school while minimizing distractions during instructional time.
In addition, the District has collaborated closely with the Ramsey Police Department, which supports our emergency protocol approach. We agree that limiting immediate access in an emergency is in everyone’s best interest, and our protocols provide phone access when necessary. Chief Lyman’s supporting letter is available for review.
The bottom line: Creating an optimal learning environment for our students remains Ramsey's top priority. We understand this will require adjustments for both staff and students and are confident it will positively impact our school culture and our academic success.
