Pen Pals

What's happening: Smith Middle School's sixth and seventh-grade French program is bringing real-world communication skills to life through an innovative pen pal exchange with students in France. The program exemplifies how authentic learning experiences can develop crucial skills that extend far beyond language acquisition.

Big impact: As students eagerly opened their handwritten letters from French peers last week, they engaged in more than just a language exercise. This exchange cultivates essential communication competencies while fostering global awareness and cross-cultural understanding.

"This exchange transforms abstract language concepts into real connections. Students aren't just learning vocabulary and grammar – they're developing empathy, cultural literacy, and communication skills that will serve them throughout their academic careers and beyond.  I have had many students tell me that they write to their penpals over the Summer outside of classroom assignments and stay in touch well into their high school years.” - Madame Treger, Smith Middle School French Teacher.

The enthusiasm students show for writing back to their French counterparts demonstrates how authentic learning experiences can spark genuine engagement. As they share their lives and learn about their peers abroad, these young learners are building the foundation for global citizenship and effective cross-cultural communication – essential skills for success in our increasingly interconnected world.
