Smith's Gift Drive was a success! Partnering with the Tommy Strong Foundation, Smith staff and students were able to come together this holiday season to collect gifts for families currently spending the holidays in a Children's Hospital. Thank you to everyone for their donations, and to Student Council & Community Service for spearheading this collection and making this season of giving all the more bright❄️🎁
Today the Smith Library hosted our Annual Holiday Story event!
Holiday Story is an annual tradition where 6th grade English classes come into the library the last school day before Winter break to enjoy classic holiday stories read aloud by teachers.
Teachers from across all 3 grade levels and varying subject areas as well as Building Administrators volunteered to read a wide variety of holiday and winter tales including celebrations of Hanukkah, Kwanza, Christmas, and Winter stories.
It was a great way to end 2024 and ease into a well-deserved Winter Break! Special thanks to all of our volunteer readers💙❄️📖
Friendly RAMinder, early dismissal on Friday.
This week in 7th grade book club, students spread some holiday cheer by writing letters to Senior Citizens in need!
What’s Happening: This year’s student book clubs are centered around the theme of “Stories That Inspire” asking students to consider how books inspire people to think outside the box, feel empathy for others, and create new things. After reading the memoir I Will Always Write Back, 7th grade students considered how one letter can change a person’s life or brighten their day. The 7th grade book club discovered a letter writing campaign, Love For Our Elders, which seeks to connect to isolated Senior Citizens around the world during the holiday season. Students spent their meeting writing and decorating their letters with color and art, poetry, word searches, and filled their messages with encouraging words to wish these senior citizens well into the New Year!
What’s Next: All letters will be mailed out by Friday, December 20th! 6th grade and 8th grade book clubs will likewise be completing their own community service-based projects in the coming months inspired by their own grade-level book club book.
Smith School Social Studies is Spilling the Tea since 1773! Today in Ms. Roscoe's class, 6th grade students learned all about the Boston Tea Party. Students enjoyed some iced tea & snacks as they engaged with this pivotal moment in American history. Just goes to show that learning can be a REVOLUTIONARY good time!
🎶 A surprise mariachi performance in Mrs. Kenduck’s 6th-grade Spanish at Smith School class brought "Cielito Lindo" to life! 🎺Daniel Sutherland on la trompeta and Nicholas Fantacone on el tambor inspired classmates to join in singing, "Ay yay yay yay, canta y no llores!"
Experiences like this build cultural appreciation, language skills, and a love for learning in our World Language program. 🌍❤️
Mrs. Broderick's students explored energy transfers by bouncing a tennis ball on top of a basketball to see how high the tennis ball can bounce when given energy from the basketball.
🧬🔬Today we were SCIENTISTS 🔬🧬 In Mrs. Stracuzzi's Grade 7 Science class students investigated different objects and how they stored elastic energy. The students explored how a plastic spring, a metal spring, a pop up cap, a wind up butterfly 🦋 , a large rubber band, and a bouncy ball 🎾use elastic energy in different ways.
✅✅ Thank you , Mrs. Stracuzzi!
Attention Smith School: Get ready to show off your ugliest sweaters and comfiest jeans for a great cause! This Wednesday, December 11th, we’re hosting an Ugly Sweater and Jeans Day to support the Tommy Strong Foundation Gift Drive.
Here’s how you can join the fun: Bring $1 to participate! Donations can be dropped off in the cafeteria during lunch. Look for your teams jug. All proceeds will go towards helping the two families adopted by Smith’s Blue Team and White Team.
We’re making it a team competition! The team with the most participation and donations during lunch will earn points towards the Charity Challenge. Right now, the teams are tied—so this is your chance to help your team take the lead!
Teachers are joining in and donating, too, so let’s all come together to make this a success. Every sweater, every dollar, and every effort counts!
Show your school spirit, support a great cause, and may the best team win!

Yesterday, the Sullivan sisters, Alexa (Grade 2) and Avery (Grade 4), visited the Board of Education offices to record the inclement weather announcements for the 2024-2025 school year. The lucky winners of the RPEF raffle did a great recording their extremely cute early dismissal, delayed opening, and snow day announcements! ☃
Ms. Meyers class fit the entire Solar System in their hallway!! Their Solar System to scale was one astronomical unit equaling one meter. That's 93 million miles every meter!! They really got to see the "big picture"!
Smith Student Council Execs & Homeroom Reps visited the New Jersey Hall of Fame!
StuCo representatives took a trip to the American Dream Mall to visit the interactive New Jersey Hall of Fame. Students got to explore and learn about the lives of notable figures from our state including Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Albert Einstein, and many more! Exhibits included opportunities to engage in VR tours of notable figures hometowns, flight simulations, and a karaoke hologram experience with famous singers from our home state!
Smith students also got a chance to collaborate with RHS Design Thinking students on a project they are developing for the new museum.
The high school students designed and developed a Bingo game for the museum in an effort to draw new visitors and connect to young visitors.
Our middle school students were the test group and were able to provide insight & feedback to making the Design Thinking project even better.
Thank you to the RHS design thinking students and Mr. Frangione, StuCo advisors, and @newjerseyhalloffame for such a great day!
