Students in Mrs. Broderick and Mrs. Donohue's science class learned about the conservation of mass in chemical reactions by capturing a gas that we created, proving that we never lose or gain matter.

Today, Smith TV's Morning Show made it's grand premiere! Students gathered before school hours to rehearse and setup tech to live stream our morning announcements. 8th grade students from our Multimedia Exploratory class were responsible for designing, sound editing, filming, script writing, and presenting important information pertaining to the goings-on at Smith School. Students and staff agree- the first show was a huge hit!
Thank you to the Ramsey Public Education Foundation for their grant to make this happen and to Mr. Reicher for producing and facilitating this amazing opportunity for our students.
🍎 Today we learned about how literary devices & figurative language impact how readers understand the tone and the mood of literature! ✍️ Ms. Kelly visited with 7th grade ELA classes to read some Halloween-themed poetry and analyze with students what craft moves they noticed in the poetry, figure out the story or the message of the poem, and determine how poets use language to establish tone and mood. Students then had a chance to apply their thinking to a Robert Frost or a Shel Silverstein poem. What a great way to tie together ELA skill and the Spooky spirit!🎃
🍎 Today we learned about literary elements. 📘📖📙 Mrs. Johnson facilitated a study of two different plays. Students were asked to identify and contextualize the literary elements in each play. Proudly, students were able to use evidence to illustrate how the two plays were similar and different. ✅ Thank you, Mrs. Johnson‼️
One night only! Tomorrow, October 18, Smith Middle School Drama Club will present ROMEO TO GO - beginning at 7pm.
The 45-minute long play is about students who must perform an entire Shakespeare play for a schoolwide assembly during a time slot of only 10 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door - $5 each.

🍎 Today we learned about the basics of Geometry. 📐 Mr. Urbanovich guided grade 7 Math students in a discussion to establish the definitions of perimeter and area of a figure. Students were sharing ideas and strategies as the collaborated on accurately calculating perimeter and area of different sized rectangles. ✅ Thank you, Mr. Urbanovich ‼️
In Mrs. Broderick and Mrs. Donohues 7th grade science class today, we did a chemical reaction in a bag! We mixed baking soda, road salt, and water. The bag filled with gas, bubbled, and got hot. In the end, we found out that we made chalk!
Smith School kicked off our annual Scholastic Book Fair today! Students came in to explore all the great supplies & reads there are to offer. The Book Fair is open daily at Smith- 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM tomorrow through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM on Friday. Don't miss out📚📖
On Monday, Smith School kicks off the WEEK OF RESPECT with a pajama day! We want to honor the unity in our community each day during the week of respect. Our Student Council will start each day with an emphasis on HOW to add to someone else’s experience at Smith Middle School.

🍎 Today we learned about the dates of our birthdays and counting to 100 in Mrs. Merritt's Grade 6 Spanish class. 📘 This was a student-led class in which the vast majority of the conversations were happening in the Spanish language. The students were mirroring Mrs. Merritt's enthusiasm, energy, and passion for the subject. Most importantly, the students were collaborating throughout the lesson and building their self-confidence. ✅ Thank you Mrs. Merritt!
