The Tisdale Experience
The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:
* by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats
* by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using ideas and information
* by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
From: Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning By the American Association of School Librarians (1998)
The Tisdale Media Center currently houses a collection of more than 17,500 print and non-print materials, including books, DVDs, videos, student and professional periodicals, computer software and other AV materials. The media center is staffed by a full-time media specialist and a corps of hard-working and dedicated parent volunteers.
Our media center instructional program is specifically tailored to the educational and developmental needs of our students at each grade level. The curriculum for all students is two-pronged, targeting both literature appreciation and skill development. Our youngest students focus on author and illustrator studies, as well as beginning terminology and concepts related to libraries and books. Our older students continue to develop an appreciation of individual authors and illustrators while honing information literacy skills. By learning to search, locate, evaluate and use information, our students will take with them a love of reading as well as the skills they need to independently navigate the world of information.
