What's happening: Meet Lily McCarthy, an RHS Junior, former pediatric oncology patient and current S.T.E.P. teaching assistant in Ms. Diakos’s Special Education program. Lily took some time to share with us how she’s achieved tremendous success as a student and teacher’s assistant by:
drawing on personal experience
living a life of gratefulness, and
spending time helping others.
What she’s saying: “Working with Ms. Diakos’s class has helped me leave a mark and feel more a part of the school community. Getting involved has taught me so much about myself, I never thought that I would be interested in, or be successful at, this line of work. It also taught me to become a better listener, with greater patience.”
Why it matters: Lily anticipates each day, particularly cherishing the moments when she can engage with fellow students, hearing their stories and gaining insights into their lives. This anticipation fuels her enthusiasm for going to school, and influences her career aspirations.
What they’re saying: “From her first day in S.T.E.P., Lily naturally became a part of our tight-knit family. She instantly jumped in, took the time to learn about each student on a personal level, and found ways to help students she worked with. She has been a light in our classroom, and the relationships she has built will be something our S.T.E.P. students will forever treasure. I have no doubt that Lily will also treasure the small moments of victory, the laughter, the hugs and fist bumps, and the memories she has made within S.T.E.P. At the end of the day, it is all about the relationships we build that make a difference in our lives. “ -Ms. Diakos, Special Education Teacher/RHS
The bottom line: In helping others, we not only alleviate their burdens but also enrich our own lives with a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. Lily has committed herself to the same, encouraging all students, even her future RHS freshman brother, to find that activity that inspires from within.
“Even if you choose to involve yourself in something different- finding something you are passionate about is really important to make your Ramsey journey the best it can be.” - Lily McCarthy
We think you’re pretty awesome, Lily.
