In a heartwarming display of cultural collaboration, members of the Art Club teamed up with the South Asian Club to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights.
Students painted diyas (lamps/candle holders made of clay) and shared some South Asian snacks.
A student-led presentation was given during the activity to explain the history and significance of Diwali and the origin of diyas.
What they’re saying:
“Hosting this event with the Art Club made me realize how much Diwali means to me and how I can help make it a memorable experience for others. I’m glad that we were able to get a collaboration and share our cultures with everyone, while having a fun time!” -Monisha Khatri, RHS Junior
“Attending the South Asian Club Diwali event made me feel culturally validated because I loved how everyone could learn about and celebrate traditions I don’t often see or mention outside of my family. The members’ collective appreciation for South Asian culture was really cool to see, and I’m so excited to share more parts of my culture with others!” -Reyva Poage, RHS Senior
“I am thrilled with how this collaboration worked out. Students not only came away with a beautiful hand-painted diya, but also got to celebrate and learn more about Diwali and South Asian culture and beliefs. We had such a nice, engaged group of students turn up. I would love to collaborate again in the future!” -Ms. Danielle Robertson, Art Teacher
