On November 15th, Smith School 6th graders attended an assembly with guest speaker, Mr. June Chang - a lifelong educator, consultant, and motivational speaker. He currently manages partnerships with some of the world’s top tech companies on the Fortune 100 list in the areas of Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI.
Why it matters: Mr. Chang addresses his multicultural upbringing and reflects on self-identity, stereotyping, fear of being different, and the concepts of self and social awareness.
Using personal insight, Mr. Chang shares his Asian American experience with his audience in the heartfelt presentation “Acceptance.” He concludes his inspirational message with the uplifting vision that we can endeavor to all come together as we share who we are with the world.
The presentation was heartful, impactful, and focused on unity.
The Grade 6 students consistently heard from Mr. Chang how acts of kindness can go such a long way.
Mr. Chang provided anecdotes and examples of how his history and his upbringing was impacted by small acts of kindness, and how it is his responsibility to spread that message to others.
Most importantly, giving kindness to another, helps nourish the spirit of our Learning Community.
The big picture: Mr. Chang was the second of five speakers in Smith Middle School’s Accepting and Belonging Conversations (ABCs) this school year.
