Black History Month, celebrated each February, honors the contributions of African Americans throughout history.
Why it matters: Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans in various fields, such as arts, science, politics, sports, and more.
Throughout their time in Ramsey Schools, students learn how Black Americans have enriched and influenced every aspect of American society.
Through this study, students are equipped with the civic skills necessary to recognize the harm of prejudice and discrimination and to uphold the core American values of freedom and justice.
📜 The history: In 1915, Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland co-founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History to raise awareness of African American achievements. Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976 thanks to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
