AP Seminar, led by RHS ELA Teacher Ms. Jennifer Mejia, has made its RHS debut! Last week they presented their first performance task, which they submit to the College Board for review.
The big picture: AP Seminar is the first of two courses that will give students the opportunity to earn an AP Capstone Diploma. The next course to be offered will be AP Research.
Why it matters: New this year, AP Seminar engages 11th graders in cross-curricular conversations and equips them with the skills in research, collaboration, and communication needed in any academic discipline.
Big impact: Under Ms. Mejia’s leadership, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and other texts. They also learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, view issues from various perspectives, and craft arguments based on evidence.
A Ramsey Graduate:
Academic Mindset - Students worked in teams of 3-5 to identify, investigate, and analyze an academic or real-world problem or issue of their choosing; consider options and alternatives; and present and defend their proposed solution(s) or resolution(s).
Communication - Each team recently presented the first of two performance tasks required to submit to the College Board.
Critical Thinking and Empathy - Topics included immigration and the aging population of Japan, democratic space, infrastructure and gentrification in the U.S., sexual exploitation and human trafficking, ingredients and practices within U.S. food systems, and supporting sustainable water production across the globe.
Personal Connection: Ms. Mejia is bilingual (fluent in Spanish), and because of her Dominican upbringing, she loves learning about all cultures and languages.
