What's happening: Mrs. Leschak’s AP Environmental Science classes recently visited Union Cemetery on Darlington Avenue in Ramsey to collect data on local human survivorship patterns from pre- and post-1900 time periods.
By the numbers: Students analyzed and interpreted data to compare male and female survivorship across both eras. This lab activity allowed students to gather and work with real-world population data, aligning with the central focus of this unit.
Go deeper: The field trip also provided an interdisciplinary experience, blending science and history.
Students had the opportunity to observe tombstones of notable local historical figures, such as John Y. Dater (pictured) – the namesake of the John Y. Dater School.
Dater was a prominent local figure who served as the Ramsey Board of Education president in the early 20th century.
The original Dater school was established in 1955 to meet the growing educational needs of the community as Ramsey's population expanded in the post-World War II era.
