About the Rams Cross Country Program

Cross country is a sport in which athletes compete on natural terrain, including grass, sand, trails, and pavement. Learning to train for, and compete in, cross country takes discipline and hard work. While races are approximately 2 miles for freshman, and 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) for junior varsity and varsity, athletes train distances longer than this to ready their bodies for competition. There is an emphasis on building a base in the pre and early season (increasing mileage, hill work, longer speed intervals), then decreased mileage and shorter, more intense speedwork when athletes are looking to peak during championship season.

While challenging, cross country athletes love their sport and enjoy the struggle with their teammates. Teams become close knit and bond over the season, regardless of their grade, ability, or experience level. Students of all abilities and backgrounds are encouraged to come out for the team and join the culture of cross country. It does not matter what you can do when you start, it is the improvement you make over the course of the season or many seasons that counts!
