Last night was the first-ever Smith School International Night! Students and their enthusiastically shared cuisine and culture from the following countries: Korea, Armenia, Peru, Argentina , England, India , Italy, Ecuador, Philippines, Pakistan, Cuba, Dominican Republic Why it matters: Language barriers and cultural differences often prevent many families from connecting to the school community. International Night is a moment for a community to take pride in and celebrate their identities, while simultaneously learning more about other cultures and developing respect and empathy. Special thanks to our Culinary Arts teacher, Ms. Stephanie Ormaeche (AKA- Chef O) for planning, recruiting, coordinating, decorating, and executing a night that allowed our diverse families to display their heritage proudly. Thank you to ELL teacher, Ms. Margaret Cosgrove, and our Custodial Staff for their assistance in the set up of this special event!

Today the Smith Library and our friends at the @ramseyfreepubliclibrary teamed up for a special MakerSpace event! Students spent their recess periods engaging with many of the public library's resources such as Snap Circuts, Button Makers, Robots, and a series of lawn games! Students also got to hear about some of the exciting programs the public library is offering this summer. What an amazing way to connect to our community- the Ramsey schools values the partnership we have with our public library. Special thanks to Mr. Jeff Hofmann, the folks at the Ramsey Library, and Ms. Kelly for making this possible!

Court is in Session at Smith School! Simulations are powerful learning tools that allow learners to develop memorable experiences that they can associate with their learning. Over the last two weeks, 6th graders in Mr. Schrettner’s class have been preparing for a trial simulation in which they showcased their grasp of the Reconstruction period in the United States. As students prepared and participated, they practiced important social studies principles, creating claims backed with evidence and presenting their arguments orally. Similiation can provide authentic learning experience for students to engage with rich content whiling giving them transferable and necessary skills for life!
